Youth Exchange Ski Day

Every year the Summit Rotary Club sponsors a ski weekend for the International Exchange students visiting our District 5450.  Copper Mountain has been very generous the past few years in providing three day lift tickets and an excellent chicken dinner. Each student is asked to pay $25, which is used to rent a condo at the Mountainside complex in Frisco, where they enjoy parties on the Friday and Saturday after skiing.  The students travel to Summit on a bus arranged by the District 5450 youth exchange committee and a member of the committee travels on the bus and stays at the Mountainside condo. The event occurs the weekend after Martin Luther King Day in January when the snow is usually good and the tourists are not too numerous.

The event has been a favorite activity for the Exchange students for the past 15 years.  The event provides an opportunity for the kids to enjoy their own company and compare their experiences since arriving in the U.S. the August before.  Although many of the kids have never been on snow before, having come from countries like Ecuador or the Philippines, they are provided with ski or snowboard lessons, and if they get tired, they can go tubing.  The hot tubs and pool at the Mountainside Clubhouse where they party on Friday and Saturday evening are always a highpoint for them.

Summit Rotary arranges the host families where the students stay for the weekend.  Both the hosts and the students benefit from the international exchange, even if only for a couple of days.  The exchange students get a chance to compare experiences with the other students.  Another high point of the event is the T-shirt exchange and signing.  Summit Rotary provides each student with a T-shirt that they pass around for signing by all.  They are encouraged to write something in their native language as a souvenir of the event.  They also each receive a goodie bag with local souvenirs and maps.
