One last reminder to all club members that next Tuesday April 18th will be a DARK day for our club with no breakfast meeting. This will be our last dark day until the end of June. Enjoy being able to sleep in next Tuesday!
Both Cindy Levin, our Club Service chair and newsletter editor, and I will be travelling starting this week. Cindy is off to Northern Scotland for several weeks and I will be on my MTB in Utah and Arizona. There will not be a newsletter update next Friday which gives us both a quick breather from our Rotary duties. Club meetings and newsletters resume the following week starting April 24th.
Our club received such sad news on Tuesday night from Tami Clark, the wife of member Doug Berg. Doug courageously fought the terrible C-word disease for several years but lost his fight on Tuesday night. We will miss Doug so much at our club meetings and events! All of us are Tami and Doug's Rotary family. Please keep Tami in your thoughts and in your hearts. Consider reaching out to her to offer your sympathy, a hug, and a smile.
On Tuesday our club board voted unanimously to award Doug Berg his first Paul Harris Fellow to honor his commitment and service to our club and The Rotary Foundation. The club contributed the few extra points Doug needed to get to the first level of Paul Harris giving. With some scrambling, an honorary certificate with Doug's name, his Paul Harris Fellow #1 pin, and his medallion was quickly put together and photographed. Tami received this photograph on Tuesday afternoon before Doug passed away later that evening.
Let's talk more about Paul Harris Fellowships. This award was first established by Rotary in 1957 to honor contributors of $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation (TRF). Thanks to Rotarians contributing worldwide, TRF distributes more than $200 million each year to the seven Rotary service pillars. The Paul Harris Fellow award is named after Paul Harris, the Chicago businessman who founded Rotary in 1905. April 19th is Paul Harris' birthday so it is fitting that our club board decided on Tuesday to consider a Paul Harris point award system for our club members.
The Paul Harris Fellow program works like this:
For every dollar contributed to TRF, the donor receives one Paul Harris point and their Rotary club also receives credit in the form of additional points. When a donor reaches 1,000 points (a $1,000 contribution) a Paul Harris Fellow award is given. Awards are given for each successive $1,000 donated. Paul Harris Fellow awards are primarily meant to encourage giving to TRF but can also be awarded to deserving Rotarians and non-Rotarians. Club members accumulate extra Paul Harris points that can be donated to another member or a non-Rotarian so they qualify for a Paul Harris Fellow award. Joe O'Malley has been the chair of our TRF giving for many years. David Groth also stays involved with our Paul Harris award program.
Over the years Summit County Rotary club has accumulated many, many Paul Harris points because our members are extremely generous and continue to regularly contribute to TRF. Your recent quarterly dues invoice has the option to contribute $30 to TRF and also another $30 to our Charitable Fund...what an easy way to take care of your dues as well as donate to your club and TRF! Stay tuned for more information on how our club will utilize our accumulated Paul Harris points to encourage club members, including new members, to continue their generous support of TRF so Rotary can Make Good Things Happen around the world.

The Rotary Book Club is currently reading "The Song of the Cell - An Exploration of Medicine and the New Human," by Siddhartha Mukherjee. We will meet in April, at a time to be announced, to discuss.

Club Service Committee Chairperson: involves activities that affect the smooth operation of our Rotary club. The Club Service Committee Chair oversees a number of committees that are responsible for our club bulletin, social committee, club bylaws and inventory of club flags. As the Committee Chair, you will participate in our club's monthly board meetings, communicate with your committee members and collaborate with other club members as needed.
Marketing Committee Chair Position
The duties are wide open to create and execute those things which promote our club motto of "making good things happen, in our community, in the world and in ourselves." You will work closely and coordinate with the club president regarding your creative ideas. You will work with our community assets like Krystal93, Summit Daily News, Rotary Social Media, Rotary Website, and other media as appropriate. You will also work directly with the Rotary Sponsor person to learn and further develop the Corporate Sponsors program.

Email spam filters often include the ability to "whitelist" certain sender IP addresses, email addresses or domain names to protect their email from being rejected or sent to a junk mail folder.
From Wickipedia: A whitelist is (1) a list of email addresses that a mail server or email client program is configured to accept as valid, incoming mail. Also called a "safe senders list," only messages from addresses on the list are allowed, and all the rest are discarded. (2) A list of valid domain names that a mail server is configured to accept. All mail from users with that domain are allowed.
Gmail:
According to internet: Gmail offers an option to add specific addresses or domains as "safe" so they aren't automatically marked as spam, known as a "Whitelist." Your Whitelists must be managed and set by you. If you want to accept all email sent from a specific address, follow these instructions:
Log in to your Gmail
Click the gear icon in the top-right, and select Settings.
Click the Filters and Blocked Addresses tab.
Click Create at New Filter.
In the pop-up window, in the From field enterthe clubrunner email addresses listed above separated by OR. example mailservice@clubrunner.ca OR @clubrunner.email
The Membership Committee needs new Rotary members (especially people who have joined Rotary in the last 2 - 3 years) to join the Committee to help us meet our challenges in attracting and retaining new members. The Committee meets as needed to discuss approaches in how we can add, and involve, new members. We need to recruit new folks to keep our club vibrant and involved in the community!
A Prospective Member should attend 3 meetings before turning in his/her application, sponsor form, a short bio and $50 application fee to the Membership Chairman, David Guignard, or to any one on the Membership Committee. The application will be presented to the Membership Committee for approval. Once approved, the applicant's bio will be posted in our bulletin for 3 weeks. If there are no questions about the Prospective Member, the induction will be scheduled. Two categories of Membership are available – a Family Membership and a Corporate Membership. Please contact an individual on the Membership Committee for details on these new types of Membership.
