Reflections: A Call for Kindness

Once again, I was deeply moved by Bea’s inspirational reminder this week, not to judge a book by its cover. Her honesty in sharing moments where she caught herself making assumptions about others based on appearances was a powerful reflection of how natural—but also how limiting—our snap judgments can be.

Deb Hage then shared her own poignant story: some of her adopted children, full-fledged American citizens, now fear for themselves and their families simply because their skin color doesn’t match someone else’s idea of what an American “should” look like.

Scott Price, in a recent inspiration, reminded us that we often see things very differently from one another. When that happens, he suggested we use the Four-Way Test to guide our reactions, helping us respond in ways that reflect Rotary’s values and strengthen our relationships.

These stories brought to mind a recent conversation I had with a Rotarian from the Breckenridge Mountain Club. He shared that there has been tension between our clubs, in part because one of our members made it very clear he did not condone a fellow Rotarian’s marriage to another man.

I was stunned. How could one Rotarian—who pledges the Four-Way Test each week—make another feel that their life, their family, or their love is somehow less worthy? To judge someone’s life choices in a way that breaks relationships rather than builds goodwill and better friendships is not who we are as Rotarians.

No names are necessary. That’s not the point. The point is that as Rotarians, we have committed to the Four-Way Test. None of us follows it perfectly—after all, we are human—but among fellow Rotarians, it should be a very high priority. If we can’t strive to live by it with one another, then we are missing the very heart of Rotary.

I am reminded of the lyrics sung by Zak Abel:
“If there's one thing in this life that is guaranteed,
It's you and I might see a few things differently.
In a world where you can be anything, I'll be kind to you—
Could you be kind to me?”

Life is complicated enough. As Rotarians—and as human beings—can we not, at the very least, be kind to one another?

Let’s make kindness our Rotary habit, so that every person who enters our circle leaves feeling respected, valued, and welcomed.

With warm Rotary hugs and much gratitude,

Judi

Prospective member Neal Drobenare

I was born in Brooklyn, attended college at Stony Brook, and went to law school at the University of Buffalo.

I started my career as a lawyer but soon transitioned into turning around failed government housing agencies in New York and DC. After that, I moved into building affordable housing around the nation.

Currently, my projects include a 54-unit, middle-income apartment project on Galena Street in Frisco, which is under construction, and a 50-unit, low-income project that will replace the West Main Professional Building, which will be underway in the spring, as well as larger projects in Denver, Houston and Minneapolis.

In my role as senior vice president at the NHP Foundation, I head up “originations,” which means finding and structuring new deals and creating new business lines that help the foundation meet its mission of providing and preserving affordable and workforce housing.
