Bee Jeanson notified us late Wednesday May 10th that the device had fallen through during the day. No word on the exact time yet but May 10th is THE day. Check your ticket stubs! The Ice Melt committee will be working with the marina to retrieve the device and hope to zero in on the winners sometime early next week. I hope to have more information to share at next Tuesday's meeting. Congratulations and many thanks to Bee Jeanson's committee for their hard work ensuring the 37th Annual Ice Melt contest was a success!
Our next annual club fundraiser, Car Raffle, is gearing up in the background as we wind down Ice Melt. Jim Brook, Steve Cornwell, and Steph Katz are preparing for this huge undertaking. Jim has kindly stepped up to fill the Club Raffle Manager role recently vacated by Lynne Baer. This involves communicating directly with the Secretary of State's office so that our club stays within the strict rules for CO state raffles. Jim is also currently working through the online raffle manager certification process. Thank you Jim and also to Lynne for covering this important club role now and in the past.
Jim and Steve are asking for club members who would consider helping in the background with the Car Raffle fundraiser this summer. For all of you Summit Rotarians who do not like selling car raffle tickets during the summer, this is meant for YOU! There are important behind-the-scenes jobs that do not require selling. These jobs can be time flexible and tailored to your availability and interests. Contact Jim Brook or Steve Cornwall for more information about these non-selling volunteer Car Raffle positions. It takes all club members to make Car Raffle, our largest fundraiser of the year, a success. The funds raised by Car Raffle support our giving to many local nonprofits and community initiatives.
Our club is now in our 2nd year of the two-year Adopt a Rec Path program where we are responsible for cleaning the walking/biking recreation path along the Dillon Dam Rd between the two guard houses. Please join us TODAY at noon at the west guard house parking lot to do our first clean-up sweep. Count on about 1.5 hours of time and some great conversation with fellow club members. Weather call will be made the morning of. We will be conducting this clean-up biweekly through October when our term ends with Summit County. A great walk with great scenery and usually very little trash to pick up. Consider joining for a clean-up walk or two.
Ann Clement and David Matthews have taken up their spring residence in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Ann reports that springtime in this magnificent city along a river canal is beautiful. Last week they drove into Italy near Venice for an event hosted by the Rotary Club of Treviso, Italy. More than 120 Rotarians attended the event from all over Europe and, with Ann and David there, the US. The purpose was to inform local Rotaract and Interact clubs of the international projects that Rotary clubs are involved with. The event was hosted in a beautiful villa owned by a local Rotarian and each club brought a dish associated with their country. Ann and David dressed in western cowboy gear and brought American hotdogs! Thanks for sharing this adventure with us.

The Rotary Club of Summit County is seeking host families for the 2023-24 academic year.
Our club will be sponsoring two outbound Summit High School students, going to spend one of the best years of their lives in Sweden and Finland. In turn, we will host two foreign students who will live in our wonderful community and attend SHS next year.
Each student will stay with three different Summit County families, so each host family has a student live with them for three months. It is a fun, educational, eye-opening way to bring the world together and make international connections.

I seek to be part of an organization known for ethical leadership and involved in a wide range of community services. I have chosen both of my careers because of my interest in creating positive change. Community journalism allowed me to further my passion to inform people so that they could make educated decisions. Teaching allowed me to further my passion to give young people a voice and a set of analytical skills so they can become impactful members of the community. I choose my volunteer pursuits for similar reasons. Community is the common denominator. In Rotary, I see many opportunities to work with a group of likeminded people to make positive changes in our community.
I grew up in St. Louis Missouri attending local schools from K-12. My primary family includes my parents and my younger brother. I attended college at Miami University of Ohio in Oxford, Ohio and attained a bachelor's degree in Journalism in 1988. I was hired by the Gannett company of community newspapers and worked for the company for 12 years in editing roles for newspapers in Visalia, California; Boise, Idaho; Nyack, New York; and White Plains, New York. I married Jeff Cooper and we raised two children. I obtained a master's degree in education from Boise State University in Idaho in 2000 and have been teaching literature and composition to students in grades 6 through 12 through this year. I began my teaching career at at Bishop Kelly High School in Boise, Idaho, and then our family moved to Eagle County, Colorado in 2004. Since then, I have been teaching at The Vail Academy K-8 school in Avon, Colorado and Vail Christian High School in Edwards, Co. My husband and I moved to Silverthorne in May, 2021 in order to be closer to my parents in Denver.
The Rotary Book Club is currently reading "The Song of the Cell - An Exploration of Medicine and the New Human," by Siddhartha Mukherjee. We will meet in June, at a time to be announced, to discuss.

The Membership Committee needs new Rotary members (especially people who have joined Rotary in the last 2 - 3 years) to join the Committee to help us meet our challenges in attracting and retaining new members. The Committee meets as needed to discuss approaches in how we can add, and involve, new members. We need to recruit new folks to keep our club vibrant and involved in the community!
A Prospective Member should attend 3 meetings before turning in his/her application, sponsor form, a short bio and $50 application fee to the Membership Chairman, David Guignard, or to any one on the Membership Committee. The application will be presented to the Membership Committee for approval. Once approved, the applicant's bio will be posted in our bulletin for 3 weeks. If there are no questions about the Prospective Member, the induction will be scheduled. Two categories of Membership are available – a Family Membership and a Corporate Membership. Please contact an individual on the Membership Committee for details on these new types of Membership.
