Reflections: Literacy – The Foundation of Rotary’s Work

At our last meeting, we focused on literacy, and it really struck me how essential it is to everything Rotary does. Literacy isn’t just one of our many ‘projects’—it’s the foundation that makes progress possible across all Seven Areas of Focus.

Perhaps not everyone knows that Rotary has Seven Areas of Focus, so I thought I would add my view on how literacy is vital to each area:
  • Promoting Peace: Peace depends on people being able to communicate, share ideas, and understand one another. Literacy gives people that voice.
  • Fighting Disease: Health campaigns, prescriptions, and prevention only work if people can read and understand the information. Literacy truly saves lives.
  • Clean Water and Sanitation: Safe practices don’t spread without education—and education depends on literacy.
  • Saving Mothers and Children: Families thrive when mothers can read nutrition guides, health information, and educational materials for their children. Again, literacy saves lives.
  • Supporting Education: Of course, literacy is the very key to education. Without it, doors stay closed.
  • Growing Local Economies: A literate community can work, build, innovate, and prosper.
  • Protecting the Environment: To care for our planet, communities need to understand and act on the knowledge available to them—and that starts with reading.
When you step back, it’s clear that every one of our goals as Rotarians depends on literacy. It’s the thread that ties together all of Rotary’s work. Helping someone learn to read isn’t just about words on a page—it’s about unlocking opportunity and hope for an entire community.

Once again, we Unite For Good.

With warm Rotary hugs and much gratitude,

Judi

What's Up? September 26

The 50th Anniversary Gala was a hoot!  Jim Brook wowed the crowd with a complete anthology of Summit County and the Rotary Club formation, legacy members, projects throughout the years all the way to the current era. It was a masterful collection of humor, photos, and the impact of Rotary on our community over the past 50 year.  A complete photo set from Butch is here:

Maggie Ducayet took some leftover coats from last year's Adopt and Angel and donated them to The Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota. A representative from the reservation wrote this;

“Please express sincerest appreciation for the new winter coats donated to the Pine Ridge Reservation by your Rotary club. We are so pleased to present your generous contribution to the children of the Lakota Nation. The need is is great.

With deepest gratitude,

Carol Vagnieri - Lakota Nation Liaisson"
